The construction of the Merdeka Building was begun in 1895. the architects were Van Gallen Last and C.P Wolff Schoemaker. Originally this building was a convention veneu for the Dutch high officials, high military officers and the Dutch planation overseers, and was called the Sociteit Concordia (Gedung Concordia).
During its initial use this building it was divided into 2 main rooms, the Schowberg Room and the Sociteit Room. In 1920 and 1928 it was renovated. During the Japanese occuption the name of the building was changed to Dai Toa Kaikan and it was used as a culture center. When the Asia Africa Conference was to be held in this building its name was changed again by the first.
Indonesia President, Ir. Soekarno, to the Merdeka Building (the Indepedence Building). This is why the name of the street in front of the building is Asia Afrika Street.
The Merdeka Building has been used for several activities such as the writing of the Indonesia Constitution (1957), Temporary People's Representative Council (1961), the Muslim Asia and Afrika Conference (1996).

The next left wing of The Merdeka Building we can see Asia Africa Conference Museum. For visitor who want to visit this museum open Sunday until Friday on 08.00 – 15.00 WIB.
This museum has a permanent exhibition library and also Audio Visual room.
