This Regency has now the motto saying 'Karawang Pangkal Perjuangan' meaning that Karawang used to be the base camp of the struggle for Independence in the period of the Japanese and the Dutch occupations. Rengasdengklok, one of the cities in Karawang, for example, was the place where the patriots of Independence gathered together and were determined to proclaim the independence of Indonesia. And a monument is dedicated to the event, erected right on the site where they are used to be the Headquarters of PETA (Pembela Tanah Air) (the Protectors of Fatherland). Beside, here there is a historic house belonging to Djian Kie Siong where Soekarno and Hatta, the proclaimers of independence of Indonesia, temporarily stayed.
