Cianjur is a city west of Bandung, the provincial capital of West Java, and the capital of Kabupaten Cianjur, Indonesia. Cianjur is about 120 km from Jakarta, and 60 km from Bandung.
Cianjur history started from three hundred years ago. Based on written history, since 1614, area of mount Gede and Pangrango was under Sultan Mataram authority in Central Java. On July 2, 1677, Raden Wiratanu son of RA Wangsa Goparana Dalem Sagara Herang carried out a duty to defend Cimapang Area. His effort was closely related to the pressure of VOC/Nederland, because they wanted make a relationship with Sultan Mataran Amangkurat I, Nevertheless, Amangkurat I patriotic attitude who refused to cooperate caused him to leave mataram palace on July 2, 1677. This brought Mataram lost the authority.
Ten days later, the news of Mataram lost the authority heard in Cianjur, exactly at July 12, 1677. Then, this moment was inspired and to be instated by the gevernment of Cianjur regency as an anniversary of Cianjur on local regulation number 27 year 1982 serial D, dated July 17, 1982, about determining Cianjur birthday, and RA. Wiratanu I was stated as the first regent of Cianjur in 1677 1691.
In the middle of 17th century, people of Sagara Herang made an expansion and looked toward for a place near the river to stay. The new place named as river where they lived. It happened along with Raden Djajasasana, son of Aria Wangsa Goparana as the descend of Sunan Talaga left Talaga because of he become a Moslem, while all of Sunan Talaga were Buddhist.
Ari Wangsa Goparana, then established Nagari Sagala Herang and spread out Islam to surrounding areas. Meanwhile,
Cikundul was capital city of Sagala Herang where people of Djasasana lived. A few years earlier before 1680, the place where Djajasasana lived was named Cianjur. (Tjiandjoer).
Cianjur has a population of about 100,000, and many of its residents commute to work in Bandung. Cianjur is famous for its rice, often called the "rice warehouse" (gudang beras) of the region. It is also famous for its preserved fruits called manisan, which is popular as snack. The preservation method is either dry or wet, using white sugar in both cases and vinegar and water in the latter case. The most popular manisan is made from mango, with plums and other fruits also available.
Other than rice & 'manisan', Cianjur also got a nick name 'tauco city', tauco is made from soya bean & internationally known as main ingredient for miso soup (Japanese soup).
Cianjur popular place is Puncak, most of the people knew about this place and did not aware that Puncak is part of Cianjur location. Everybody who will travel from Jakarta to Bandung via Puncak will go through Cianjur before reach Bandung.
