Batak culture resulted
essentially fro the fusion of and old rooted pre-Hindu culture and
Indian Buddhists and Hindu influences which appeared towards the five
century. The pre-Hindu cultue might be called “ Old Megalithic Culture “
and it is from this that distinguishing characteristics of Batak art
culture are descended.
Among these characteristics, mention shold
be made first of all the megaliths themselves, still perpetuated to
this day in the form of the large cement “ Singas “ which adorn modern
graves. Also the “ horned –roof houses “, the first picture of which is
to be found on a bronze drum of the Dong Son Culture, which spread out
over South East Asia from North Indo China about the third century BC,
demonstrated the longevity of the old Megalithic culture.
