Home Jakarta Shopping Tourism
Jakarta has succeeded in becoming a prime shopping haven for purchasing almost anything. Imported luxury items are sold at prices competitive with Asia's other major shopping centers. For many products, especially textiles and garments, prices are far cheaper. English is widely spoken and attentive service guaranteed. Major mega-shopping and entertainment centers are located throughout the city, from the elite Plaza Indonesia (adjacent to Grand Hyatt), Plaza Senayan and Mal Taman Anggrek in central Jakarta, to the vast Mal Pondok Indah in a nearby southern suburb. Traditional hand - crafted arts can be found at Sarinah and Pasaraya Blok-M department stores. Both are conveniently located in south Jakarta, and remain the best one - stop shopping places for Indonesian arts and crafts from throughout the archipelago. Antique and curio collectors enjoy bargaining for almost anything - including every from of brassware, Chinese porcelains and a vast array of wayang puppets - at the colorful Jalan Surabaya flea market. Real bargains can be gotten at many of the city's street markets, some open by day and others by night. These traditional markets provide a lively glimpse into the city's grassroots life. Among the major traditional markets are Pasar Cikini, Pasar Tanah Abang, Pasar Senen, Pasar Baru and Pasar Mayestic. For electronic items, computers, and clothing the best range of stock with absolute bargain prices is in the Mangga Dua area of west Jakarta.
