Jl. Medan Merdeka Utara, Jakarta Central Jakarta
The Presidential palace is situated at Jl. Merdeka Utara. It was built by Pieter Tency in 1874 and after he died, it became the property of a certain Van Isseldijk. In 1822 it was sold to Raffles, the then Lieutenant Governor for Java and its dependencies during the British interregnum (1811 - 1816). Raffles extended the courtyard and placed many beautiful statues there. From 1816 - 1826 the building was used by Governor General Van der Capellen and until 1830 by Governor General Du Bus de Gisegnies. The last Governor General to have occupied the palace was Tjarda van Starkenborgh Stachouer, who on March 8, 1942 surrendered to the Japanese forces at Kalijati airfield, accompanied by General H. Ter Poorten. Today the building is the official residence of the President and on Independence Day (August, 17) it is the center of national commemoration ceremonies.
