range inhabited by Meratus Dayak ethnic. They settle on remote places
along Meratus range. Nomadic farming, animals hunting, and ritual
ceremony are part of their life. The highest part is on Mount Besar.
The area is covered by tropical rain forest, river, mossy stone, and
tremendous waterfall. By trekking here, you will breath the fresh of
tropical forest air and whispered by the sound of mighty nature.
Meratus mountain range area is a forest area located in the South
Kalimantan province, ranging from southeast to the north and bordering
the province of East Kalimantan, the protected "Green Belt." Meratus
area is home to a rich flora and fauna, including endemic species of
Kalimantan and several of them are species that are in danger of
becoming extinct. Therefore, these species need to be protected to
ensure their conservation. Old secondary growth typically has a fairly
continuous canopy cover of greater than 6 metres, growth consists
exclusively of dense bamboo groves which shade the ground and prevent
re-entry of tree seeds. Hill dipterocarp forest is the natural
vegetation of the Meratus and can be found at the west side of the
Meratus mountains.The Meratus mountains contains rocks of the ocean
floor, limestone and sedimentary rocks.
The Meratus Mountains is
the livelihood for thousands of the Dayak Meratus people. The Mountains
functions as a water catchment area that guarantees regular irrigation
cycles for the lower lands along the rivers.
